Electric Skateboard Calculator

Electric Skateboard Speed Calculator

This calculator is intended to help you find the theoretical maximum speed for an electric skateboard. It takes motor kV as an input because it is aimed more at electric skateboards, but it may work for electric scooters and electric bikes.

The weighted RPM and weighted top speed show the respective values with efficiency factored in. About 70% efficiency is the average.

Whole numbers only (no decimal points or symbols).

  1. Thank you. This has been invaluable.

I was curious to learn whether there is some some way to compare a 5M tooth to a 3M tooth, or is it based on wheel diameter?

    1. The calculator is based on wheel diameter.
A 3M or 5M belt by itself should not make much of a difference in speed.
You would have to choose a belt based on the size of the pulleys you're using. A 3M belt will allow you to use a smaller motor pulley because the tooth pitch is smaller.

  2. Hey so what is generally a good gearing ratio for a nice balance of speed and torque? some where around 2.5 to 1?

    1. I'd say it depends on how strong your motor is. If you have a stronger motor, you could have a ratio closer to 2:1. I think 2:1 is the lowest ratio you should use for getting a higher top speed - anything lower may be too much for the motor to pull. 2.5:1 sounds like a good balance.
It would also depend on how much hills/inclines you'll regularly need to climb.

  3. This is a excellent tool.
Great short cut for off the cuff ideas and folks who even if they can do the math don't do it often enough to be confident in the results.
Great way to compare different recipes for modifications and builds.
